The Department of Art and Art History at the University of Mary Washington

announced several student awards at the opening of the Annual Student Art Exhibition on Friday, April 4, 2007, at the duPont Gallery.  The event was judged by Howard Risatti, professor emeritus of art history at Virginia Commonwealth University.  The Emil Schnellock Award in Painting, given in recognition of excellence in painting by the Department of Art & Art History and chosen by an independent juror of the Annual Student Art Exhibition, was given to senior Katherine Arens of Fredericksburg for “Self Narrative #1.” The Department of Art and Art History presents the award to recognize excellence in painting. The Melchers Gray Purchase Award was given to senior Robert Lynn of Warrenton for his work, “I Paint Raccoons Because Raccoons Like Everything.” University of Mary Washington, Fredericksburg, VA

UMW Seniors Earn Awards At Convocation May 2009

Outstanding University of Mary Washington students were honored during Senior Convocation on Friday, May 8. P. Anand Rao, associate professor of speech, delivered the evening’s address. Afterward, the following seniors were recognized: Katherine Lynn Arens of Fredericksburg was presented with the UMW Alumni Association Bachelor of Liberal Studies Distinguished Graduate Award for academic excellence and citizenship.

Thea K Viadero Scholarship Recipient 2006 & 2008

Thea K. Viadero ‘98 Scholarship in Art History and Studio Art

Roger Viadero and his family have endowed a scholarship in memory of his wife, Thea. Thea Viadero was a dedicated mother who saw her son graduate from Mary Washington College in 1993 before returning to pursue higher education herself. She earned her BLS degree from Mary Washington College in 1998, with a major in studio art. Her family has created this scholarship to honor her memory and to recognize the outstanding accomplishments of students in the BLS program at the University.
